Normally I just focus on Mac and iPhone tech. However I ran into this problem yesterday and spent hours looking for a solution so I thought this would be a good time to help out our Windows friends who use iTunes and haven't made the jump to Mac just yet.
Yesterday I looked at a computer running Windows 7 and iTunes 9 that could access the iTunes store but would fail when trying to login to iTunes with an Unable to connect to iTunes (-9812) Error message.
This particular error has a very quick fix that works for Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7. The SSL connection to the iTunes store is failing due to a bad certificate. Just goto http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=f814ec0e-ee7e-435e-99f8-20b44d4531b0&displaylang=en and download the May 2009 Root Certificate update and the bad certificate will be replaced with a good one and you can just restart iTunes and login to your account.

ReplyDeleteMy daughter upgraded her **MacBook** to iTunes 9.2.1 and now gets this Windows error when she tries to make a purchase. Apple is clueless, they claim, essentially, that you cannot get this error on a Mac.

Paul, you are the best of the best! Ive got things fixed within minutes after reading your tips. For you guys who still have the same problem, this has got to do with your Modzilla Firefox. You guys need to Install IE 8+ and make it your default browser. Read the post from another site below:-
ReplyDelete"OK, after 3 hours I found the problem was linked to certificate revocation within my default web client. I use the Mozilla Firefox client and while iTunes has fixed this issue for IE, they haven't for Firefox.
The solution was to download IE8 (+ updates) and install it as my default browser. I was then able to pass the problem and continue with the restoration of data to the iPod. Once up and running, I switched back to Mozilla as my default browser.
Interesting aside: The act of installing IE8 (+ MS updates) also installed 8, yes 8 ad-tracker cookies which I deleted using the free Yahoo toolbar Anti-Spy tool)."
hi the link no longer active?

ReplyDeleteCheers mate. Spent ages trying to fix the 9812 error after itunes updated my IPOD touch. No joy with several other 'fixes' until this. Much appreciated
ReplyDeleteThank you very much! I started hating Apple and myself for trusting Apple. Pretty stoopid from Apple not to check for this common issue BEFORE starting the update of the iDiotPhone, but your trick worked flawlessly, thank you so much!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for posting - your fix was just what I needed (and just what Apple's recommendation for the error was missing).
ReplyDeleteRegards.
You are a bloddy champ mate!
ReplyDeleteThanks for this! I really don't know what I would have done without this post - it's a really good tool to help fix the 9812 error.
ReplyDeleteThis worked for me! I was thinking this fix might be outdated but tried it anyways. Thanks!!
